The island of Pemba, 48km northeast of Zanzibar and 56km off mainland Tanzania, is Zanzibar's less know half and far removed from the commercialisation of Unguja. Pemba has one main town in the north which is Wete, a dhow port. Tourism in Pemba is in its infancy, public transport is limited and tourist accommodation is currently scarce.
In contrast the island is lush and fertile when compared to main parts of Zanzibar. The island is rich in ruined cities in the centre and north from the 19th century.
