The south of the island of Zanzibar does not have quite as many roads as the north but still has plantations and small villages with friendly locals. Tourism has had less of an impact in the south with fewer large beach resorts and more beach lodges.
Down in the south is Kizimkazi which lures many visitors to see the dolphins. Tours can easily be arranged and the chances of seeing dolphins is very high at present although this is dropping as the volume of visitors increases with tourism.
Another natural highlight is Jozani Forest with frequently seen troops of endangered red colobus monkeys. These are only found in Zanzibar and are amazingly easy to get close to for photographs. Nearby is the Pete-Jozani Mangrove Boardwalk which winds through coral thicket vegetation, mangrove forest, and across a creek in the north of Pete inlet.
