After exploring the sights of Stone Town, the north of the island is a total contrast with its lush plantations, farmlands, mango trees and small villages where the folk are simpler and more friendly. Here people have been leading the same basic existence over many years and the only sign of time is the odd duka with signs advertising top cards for mobile phones. Their existence, on land or on the ocean, is a tough one and it is worth taking some time to see more of the island than just the road from the airport to your beach resort.
Apart from Nungwi in the very north, which has become the Benidorm of Zanzibar, most of the island is unspoilt, particularly the wonderful beaches on the east coast which are amongst the finest you will see anywhere. Add to this Mnemba Atoll with its world class diving and snorkelling and you have the ideal destination for a peaceful and memorable holiday.
Sadly there are a variety of large beach resorts springing up down the east coast this unspoilt environment wont be so for too much longer. Get in there now before the sands of time and tourism take thier toll.
