Ras Nungwi was originally built in 1995 but has improved considerably over the years and is now one of Zanzibar's best holiday destinations. Now owned by Tim Hendriks, the resort rates highly on all counts. It has a fine fresh-water swimming pool, well maintained gardens and public areas and excellent dive facilities.
The area surrounding the resort is somewhat barren with very few palm trees and the road from Nungwi is full of potholes. However this is more than compensated for by the resort and its magnificent beach. Upon arriving you will be impressed by the thatched roofs of the reception area. From here a short flight of steps leads down to a view of the lounge, the bar and the restaurant, all open-plan under a complex thatched roof. Beyond that you will find the pool and dive centre and finally the superb beach.
Located opposite Mnemba Atoll, the resort has 15 magnificent dive sites waiting for you. The hotel's own watersports centre is a PADI member and the centre offers PADI courses, snorkelling, dhow cruises, windsurfing, water-skiing, kayaking and deep-sea fishing.
There are three types of accomodation plus a magnificent honeymoon suite including its own plunge pool and guaranteeing total privacy. It even has its own sets of stairs to the beach below.
The food at Ras Nungwi has to be amongst the best on the island with strong African/Zanzibari influences. Fresh organic local produce is used whenever possible. A full bar service is available including a selection of cocktails and premium South African wines.
To summarise Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel is a superb destination and Chris Goodwin and his team will look after you during your stay. This hotel offers you as much as resorts in the Maldives and Mauritius but with less damage to your pocket. Throw in the history of Zanzibar and you have the perfect getway.
